This Silver Spring ballroom is one of the Baltimore-Washington area’s largest and most versatile ballroom dance venues, offering a variety of social, instructional and special events, throughout the week and all year around. While unofficially we are know as “The Silver Spring Ballroom,” we are conveniently located on the Baltimore Washington corridor directly off of Rt. 29, in the suburbs of Montgomery County, and it’s just a short drive to Howard County and Baltimore.
Stepping onto our authentic floating floor feels almost like dancing on air, while our high ceilings and festive lighting compose an ideal backdrop for an entertaining and memorable evening.
The main ballroom features a 7,200-square-foot dance floor, which is not just any wooden surface. We are proud of our state-of-the art maple floating floor. Sometimes called a sprung floor, a floating floor absorbs shocks, giving it a softer feel for dancing. These floors are also known to reduce injuries and minimize fatigue.
The smaller ballroom, the Studio, is about 750 square feet and has a mirrored wall. It is connected to the main ballroom and is perfect for more intimate events and celebrations. View photos.
Adjacent to both the main ballroom and the smaller ballroom is the Take Five Café. The Café is open during most dances and offers an assortment of freshly prepared food as well as beverages including wine and beer.
The dance hall at 2126 Industrial Parkway in Silver Spring, Maryland, first opened several decades ago. Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center now occupies the space, and under the dynamic direction of its owner and managers, this Silver Spring ballroom enjoys a large following of devoted dancers.
In the summer of 2011, Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center, LLC was established.
Meet the Owners and Managers
Richard Zierdt, first owner, current partner, is a computer programmer who loves to dance, and has been dancing since 1971. Richard will say that he is “strictly a social dancer” and it is important to him that Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center has a social base. However, he is also excited about the emphasis being placing on International and competitive dancing. As he explains, Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center, with its 7,200-square-foot floor, has room for everyone and every dance style. Richard and his wife, Dawn, love to dance and he can be found dancing with her almost every Sunday evening.
Ron Wagaman, principal partner, general manager, is a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in business administration. Ron worked full time for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. from 1976 to 1996, the last position as Assistant Director for Museum Operations. He then managed a post-production film company in Los Angeles for four years. Ron and and his wife Amy met at the Hollywood Ballroom in 1994 and were married shortly thereafter. Since 1996, Ron and Amy have owned and operated their own ballroom dance business.
Amy Wagaman, partner, is a graduate of the Soochow University Economics Department in Taiwan. She taught economics and commerce mathematics at the Commerce High School in Taiwan for three years and studied computer programming at Clemson University in South Carolina. She has managed a variety of retail businesses over the years and is currently manager of the Oriental Décor home furnishings store at the White Flint Mall in Rockville, Maryland. Amy also owns and manages Dance Fashion, the boutique at Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center.
Meet the Administrative Staff
The Ballroom could not function without the services–almost entirely volunteer–of the Administrative Staff.
Claire Carabello is the manager of food service, runs the afternoon Tea Dances, manages the newsletters, assists with bookkeeping, manages table reservations, tickets and customer service and wears more hats than can be counted. Claire is a volunteer.
Mary McCormack is the Event Sales Manager who coordinates the private event rental program and who can also be seen behind the concessions counter. Mary volunteers many of her hours to provide the quality of work that she does.
Rich Gross provides technical, administrative and logistic support; keeps track of statistics; chairs the Music Committee and is a valuable source for what’s happening in the local dance communities. Rich is a volunteer.
Bea Riley manages the website; provides graphic support for the website, flyers and other promotions; maintains the printed and web calendars; and works with ballroom decor and color coordination. She is a volunteer.
